Energy Efficiency Services
I-CARE's energy efficiency programs are designed to help low-income residents lower their energy use and costs.
WAP & HAARP
The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is designed to help citizens who meet federal low-income guidelines to lower their energy usage and costs. HARRP is a Heating Appliance Repair and Replacement Program that works in concert with the Weatherization Assistance Program to repair and/or replace inefficient heating and air systems in the homes of low-income families, especially the elderly, individuals with disabilities and families with children.
WAP is offered in Iredell and Lincoln Counties to eligible households. Weatherizing a home involves conducting an energy assessment to identify the most cost-effective energy improvements that need to be performed on the dwelling, and then making those improvements at no cost to the household.
Typical services may include:
-
Replacing existing lighting with energy efficient bulbs
-
Improving health and safety conditions by addressing carbon monoxide levels and combustion safety
-
Sealing major air leaks
-
Installing insulation in attics, walls, and floors
-
Sealing and insulating ducts
-
Installing a smart thermostat
-
Performing tune-ups and repairs to heating and cooling systems
The Weatherization Program is NOT a remodeling, maintenance or rehabilitation program.
The amount that can be spent on each dwelling is limited. Incidental repairs to the home are made only to facilitate the installation and preservation of weatherization materials – not to improve the value of a home.
As a rule, the Weatherization Program does NOT install windows or doors.
On rare occasions a primary window may be installed, but only when necessary to reduce significant air leakage.
Typical improvements requested that are NOT allowable include window and door replacements, roof or siding replacements, mobile home skirting, painting and mold remediation.
There are other programs in your community that are better suited for remodeling or quick repair purposes.
*Funding for the Weatherization Assistance Program is made possible by financial assistance administered by the Office of the Governor through the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
